University of Coimbra

The University of Coimbra was created by King Dinis in 1290. It is the oldest university of the country and one of the oldest in the world. The General Study, as was known at that time, started operating in Lisbon, it was transferred to Coimbra, in 1308, but only in 1537, the University was definitely settled in the city.

 

Nowadays, the University of Coimbra is composed by three poles spread all over the city: the main pole (Pole I), where it started, the Pole II dedicated to Engineering and Technology, and Pole III devoted to Life Sciences.

The unique tangible and intangible heritage of University of Coimbra, and its role as a keystone in the scientific culture of Europe and the World was recognize, in 2013, as UNESCO World Heritage.

The University of Coimbra is divided in eight faculties where more than twenty thousands of students attend a high diversity of courses (179 courses degrees and masters and 89 PhDs).

The University of Coimbra invests in the future through a collaboration of more than 75 research institutes in several areas, such as life sciences, technologies, literature, history, and others.

Directions to Coimbra

Coimbra is located 200 km north of Lisbon and 100 km south of Oporto. The best way to get to Coimbra is to fly to Lisboa or Porto and then take a train.

 

From Lisbon

 

Step 1

Go to the "Gare do Oriente" railway station. There are two recommended ways to get there from the airport: a) take the subway red line and leave at "Lisboa Oriente" station (1.9 Euros) Check schedules at www.metrolisboa.pt. b) take a taxi (10 min., around 10 euros)

 

Step 2

At "Gare do Oriente" train tickets are sold on the 1st floor and train-lines are on the 2nd floor. Trains depart approximately every hour (from 6am to 10pm) and the journey takes around two hours. You can buy tickets and check schedules online at www.cp.pt.

 

Step 3

Get off the train at “Coimbra B”. Either take a taxi directly to your Hotel (it should cost less than 10 €) or take a local train to “Coimbra A” (downtown station), using your previous ticket (this transfer is included in the price).

 

From Oporto

 

Step 1

Go from the airport to the "Campanha" railway station. To get there take the metro line E. Tickets are available at the metro station, buy a z4 ticket (4 zones - 1.5 euros). It should take about 40 minutes to reach "Campanha" station. Check the metro schedules at www.metrodoporto.pt.

 

Step 2

At "Campanha" station, tickets are sold on the main entrance and trains to Coimbra usually depart from line 8. Trains d1epart hourly (from 6am to 10pm) with a journey time of about one hour and fifteen minutes for Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains. You can buy tickets and check schedules online at www.cp.pt.

 

Step 3

Get off the train at “Coimbra B”. Either take a taxi directly to your Hotel (it should cost less than 10 €) or take a local train to “Coimbra A” (downtown station), using your previous ticket (this transfer is included in the price).
